ABOUT
Quorning Boats established
Quorning brothers Borge (Jens’ father) and Bent establish Quorning Boats on its current site outside the fishing village of Skaerbaek, to build trimarans for the European market
Prior to establishing Multihull Solutions, Al was already the proud owner of an original Dragonfly 25, following many years of racing and cruising multihulls over c.25,000nm offshore in UK waters, transAtlantic and the Mediterranean.
He is a qualified industrial designer with experience of multihull design including the innovative, wheel-chair accessible 36ft catamaran Spirit of Scott Bader. He also undertook design work for Dame Ellen MacArthur’s Offshore Challenges and the Volvo Ocean Race.
His first multihull was the legendary Hobie 16. Since then he’s sailed a huge variety of multihulls, including many production and racing boats. Exceeding 40 knots aboard a spectacular 100+ft maxi-catamaran remains a highlight. (There’s even been the odd monohull, including Ellen MacArthur’s famous ‘Kingfisher’ Open 60).
Racing results on a variety of catamarans and trimarans include:
+ multiple Round the Island races, including class wins + inaugural ‘Multihull, 2-handed’ winner in 2019 on Dragonfly 28
When the time came to own a multihull for both family cruising and racing, Al’s experience of most major brands of multihull left only one boat in the running: a Dragonfly.
Today Multihull Solutions Ltd is one of the longest-serving Dragonfly dealers and Al sails a Dragonfly 28 with his family, based in the beautiful Chichester Harbour on the south coast.
“We are very pleased to have Al Wood on board the Dragonfly Team, after taking very good care of the UK market for Dragonfly Trimarans for 15 years. Al is very professional and you are in very good hands before and not least also after you received your new or secondhand Dragonfly from Al”
Jens Quorning, CEO Quorning Boats ApS
All parts of a Dragonfly trimaran are designed and built in-house, and many other key suppliers are also local. The skilled workforce of around 35 people produce 35-40 trimarans per year. Dragonfly has also been the choice of champions, including Olympic sailing legend Paul Elvstrøm, who’s last boat for 10 years was a modified DF 800, and Elvstrøm Sails remain key partners to this day.

Trident 28 launched, but it was a long path to establish trimarans so the yard also built leisure boats
first trimaran called Dragonfly was a 16ft plywood + foam boat for the young Eric and Jens Quorning – no way they would start saying in Optimist. 2nd production hall built, still in use today for DF 25 + DF 32 production.
The first production trimaran branded Dragonfly was the 25, designed and built by Borge and Jens.
Jens’ brother Eric sailed a modified DF 25 in the 2-handed Round Britain & Ireland Race, winning overall on handicap, while Jens raced his own custom 35ft racing trimaran Quick Step III.
Dragonfly 800 launched, initially with similar alloy beams to DF 25, with 300+ built in total
Jens won the European Micro-Multihull Championships with Henrik Bøje, and sets 645nm Round Denmark record with brother Eric, both on DF 800 MkII
updated Dragonfly 800 MkIII was introduced with the now-familiar GRP moulded wings and the innovative Swing Wing system – probably the greatest step in the Dragonfly history, allowing the boats to fold quickly to reduce beam by 50% for the marina.
Dragonfly 1000, their first offshore trimaran, was introduced which was a big step for the yard and 42 were built until 2002.
Jens and Henrik Bøje won their 2nd European Micro-Multihull Championships, on DF 800 Mk3
Jens Quorning took full control of the business as his parents Børge and Bit retired, and two new productions halls were built to allow expansion
Dragonfly 920 was introduced and was one of the first production boats with a carbon mast as standard. By the time it was effectively replaced by Dragonfly 28 in 2009, 165 of these trailerable offshore cruisers were built.
Dragonfly contribution to the new millennium is the Dragonfly 1200, a new ocean cruiser flagship for which Jens proudly received The Danish Design Prize from the His Royal Highness, Crown Prince of Denmark
Dragonfly 920 Extreme awarded ‘European Yacht of the Year’ for boats up to 30ft by the jury of top international yachting journalists
Dragonfly 35 introduced. This spectacular performance trimmer was ahead of its time, and the first Dragonfly designed in 3D with computer-milled tooling. An incredible 17 boats were sold before the launch and almost 50 in total
Dragonfly 35 won the prestigious title ‘European Yacht of the Year’ in the Multihull category, in recognition of its unique combination of performance and quality
Dragonfly 28 replaces the DF 920, and was the first Dragonfly to fold ready to trailer with only the mast to lower. It remains the benchmark for trailerable trimarans and by 2020 well over 200 have been built in 3 versions
Dragonfly 32 launched as a smaller and more dynamic version of the Dragonfly 35, also benefitting for advances in design and technology. By summer 2020 almost 70 have been built
