DRAGONFLY 28 – HULL 250
We are delighted to announce that Dragonfly 28, hull no. 250 is now in build at the Quorning Boats yard in Denmark.
This is a fantastic production milestone for Dragonfly 28, which remains our most popular trimaran model.
To celebrate this great achievement, Dragonfly 28, hull 250 debuts a new Jubilee Edition with special black details. This special boat will be proudly displayed on the Dragonfly stand at the Düsseldorf Boot show in January 2023. This is Europe’s largest boat show, and we’d be delighted to meet you there.
Dragonfly 28 timeline
The Dragonfly 28 series was introduced in 2009, initially with the choice of Touring or Sport models. Both boats were essentially the same, but the Sport included a taller carbon mast and high-tech sails.
This model was entirely designed in 3D on a CAD system, with tooling CNC machined. This allowed several innovations:
Firstly, this was the first Dragonfly to fold within the EU regulations on the water. Therefore only the mast needs to be lowered before road transport, and we have a simple onboard system for this. Of course the Dragonfly Swing Wing system allows the boat to fold in less than 2 minutes while motoring into the marina, using no tools.
Secondly, Jens Quorning resolved the issue of excessive spray, which diminished the appeal of fast trimaran sailing for many families. Clever design with large curved spray-rails near the bow virtually eliminates the infamous ‘fire-hose’, which still afflicts other less-advanced designs.
Thirdly, Dragonfly 28 has an additional aft berth below the cockpit. This has transformed family sailing, as the starboard cabin berth can usually be left
In 2016 the deck design was revised, with larger and more elegant windows in our latest style. This has further increased the light in the cabin.
The spectacular DF 28 Performance version was also introduced, which has now replaced the Sport version. This model has larger wave-piercing float design which adds greater righting moment for even higher performance.
Despite these changes and upgrades, all 250 boats have used the same hull and deck moulds.
Dragonfly 28 reviews
Our first DF 28 demonstrator in the UK was hull no 2, a Sport version. This boat was tested by all the major UK media, and received rave reviews. After a fantastic sail out in Hayling Bay, Yachting World concluded:
It’s the most exhilarating sailing I’ve done since a ride on an Extreme 40 cat last year – and I enjoyed it as much.
The Extreme 40 series was a one-design professional racing series
Yachts & Yachting were equally impressed, noting:
We hit a top speed of 18.7 knots on the GPS without even trying. There was no drama, with minimal heeling and smooth acceleration in gusts, as the Dragonfly sailed steady and level with its wake stretching far behind.
While its high performance attracts the headlines, Dragonfly 28 is also a brilliant and popular family fast cruiser that’s easily handled by couples.
The Dragonfly 28 is now well proven on the race course too. It won the Round the Island Race Multihull 2-Handed category twice. This year it was 2nd on corrected time and an amazing 10th fastest out of 1,100+ on elapsed time. The only monohulls to finish before us were 4x ‘Fast 40+’ Grand Prix racers.
